- Lemon Juice – I always prefer freshly squeezed, use what you have though.
- Simple Syrup – Scroll down to “How To Make Simple Syrup” section to find out how to make your own at home!
- Egg White – This is what makes the drink, but if you’re wincing at the thought, you can leave it out.
- Club Soda – Use your favorite to top it all off! We need that FIZZ!
How To Make A Gin Fizz
- Mix: Add the gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white (if using) to a shaker and vigorously shake for about 15 seconds. Add 3 or 4 ice cubes and shake until well-chilled.
- Finish: Strain using a mini strainer into a glass and top with Club soda.
- Serve: Garnish with lemon wedge/slice or peel and serve.
How To Make Simple Syrup
Simple syrup is made from equal parts of water and sugar. The sugar is boiled in with the water until it becomes a syrup, which can be used for a variety of different cocktails, desserts, etc. Here’s how to make it!
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- In a medium saucepan combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar has completely dissolved. Allow to cool. Store in a jar or squeeze bottle.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is A Gin Fizz?
Similar to the classic Tom Collins cocktail, a gin fizz has a very light, sour, citrus flavor that pairs beautifully with the gin’s herbaceous and floral notes. Simple syrup adds a little sweetness and the egg white is included for a frothy finish. Topped with bubbly club soda, it’s the perfect refreshing cocktail!
What Does Gin Taste Like?
Gin is primarily made from Juniper berries, giving it a “pine” like characteristic. While pine is the primary note you’ll taste, you’ll also find some varieties boasting floral and herbaceous notes. Gin can be customized by adding different herbs and botanicals, so you will find many varieties available! Some may taste different than others, so try out a few and find your favorite!
Why Egg White?
The egg white is authentic to a gin fizz! It’s what gives us that frothy top and adds to the drink itself. To be a true gin fizz, the cocktail should include it, but many choose to leave it out due to preference. I highly recommend adding it for authenticity!
Tips
- You can purchase different “flavored” gin. Test some out and see which one is your favorite!
- If you want to add something a little extra, you can add different types of bitters into this drink for a more complex flavor profile.
- You can make your own gin at home! There are many places that sell “at home gin making kits” that include different botanicals and herbs to customize your own! Check online or with your local liquor distributors for more info.
- Use lime juice as a substitute for lemon if you prefer!
- You can add as much or as little simple syrup as you like depending on how sweet you want your cocktail.
Fun Gin Facts
- Did you know that gin is one of the healthiest types of alcohol? Made from juniper berries, a type of “super fruit,” it’s low in calories, and the botanical properties that survive the distillation process present plenty of health-boosting properties!
- Gin has also had a history of being used “for medicinal purposes.” Can you believe it?! The Royal Navy mixed gin with lime cordial to stop scurvy, and angostura bitters settled their stomachs at sea. Wild!
- Gin is said to be “the best natural remedy” for kidney and liver disease, though I am not a doctor, so always consult with your doctor first. Juniper berries are known to help stop water retention in your body, allowing you to pass more water than any other alcohol. Therefore, more harmful toxins and bacteria are flushed out your system!
