Irish Mule

I think a couple of the most common drinks for St. Patrick’s day are a traditional Guinness or a green beer. However, I wanted to try something different so this is a twist on the classic Moscow mule cocktail. This version is a bit on the strong side, so feel free to cut back on the alcohol. Also, the ginger beer I used was alcoholic, but you can switch it out for non-alcoholic ginger beer. Either way, it’s a terrific drink.

I realize that this cocktail recipe sounds like it’s Irish, but in fact it’s not. It’s really a spin off of the original Moscow mule that is made with vodka and ginger beer, and is served in a copper mug. Since then, many liquor bases have been used and this one is no exception. Some other ones include the Mexican Mule made with Tequila, the Kentucky Mule made with Bourbon, the London mule made with gin, or the Dark ‘n Stormy made with Dark Rum. So you can see just how versatile using ginger beer in a drink is.

Highlights Of An Irish Mule

  • St. Paddy’s Option. Although not a traditional Irish drink, it’s a great alternative, because of the Irish whiskey,
  • Perfect For Whiskey Lovers. If you’re a whiskey lover, why not give this drink a try. You might be surprised, it really is good!
  • Versatile. There are so many Moscow mule variations and this is just one of them, and because of this, swap out the liquor with one you prefer. There are many types of mules out there.

Ingredients You’ll Need

all ingredients needed to make irish mule cocktail.
  • Irish whiskey – Jameson Irish whiskey is probably the most popular brand, but there are many others to choose from. Just pick your favorite.
  • Lime – I used fresh squeezed lime juice. This is where you shouldn’t substitute. You’ll also want some lime wedges for garnish.
  • Ginger beer – I used alcoholic ginger beer, but you can use regular non-alcoholic, either one works fantastic.
  • Mint – Fresh mint leaves are optional but give the cocktail a nice refreshing taste.

How To Make An Irish Mule

a hand pouring irish whiskey in a copper cup.
  1. Assemble the drinks. Fill two copper mugs or similarly sized glasses with lots of ice cubes. Add the Irish Whiskey, lime juice and ginger beer to a pitcher. Gently stir it with a spoon to mix. Pour into the prepared mugs.
  2. Garnish. Garnish with lime wedges and mint sprigs if preferred and enjoy.

What Whiskey Is Irish?

Despite it’s long history, there aren’t very many whiskey distilleries. Some of the most famous Irish whiskies include Bushmills, Kilbeggan, Teeling, and, of course, Jameson. It only takes a sip of one to know that Irish whiskey is more than just something to make an Irish coffee with.

Why Is A Moscow Mule In A Copper Mug?

The drink was originally presented in a copper mug. However, because copper is very good at conducting temperature, when an ice cold mule is poured inside, the glass actually takes on that temperature and keeps the drink frosty cold longer.

Is Ginger Beer Actually Beer?

Ginger beer technically is not beer. It is often confused with ginger ale, because it is a slightly fizzy fermented drink with a pungent, spicy ginger flavor. But, contrary to its name, ginger beer isn’t a type of beer. In fact, it’s not typically alcoholic, but you can purchase some with a low alcohol content as well.

Expert Tips

  1. If possible, I would recommend using copper mugs. They really keep a drink cold for a longer time. A nice cocktail glass will also work nicely if you don’t have the copper ones.
  2. You can add more ginger beer and less alcohol for a lighter and refreshing drink.
  3. Muddle the mint for extra flavor.
