It’s time for homemade Apple Pie Spice! These warm flavors come together to give a flavorful hug to any sweet treat you’re putting together. With so many more uses than just apple pie, you can replace just about any recipe calling for cinnamon with this aromatic blend!
Apple Pie Spice Recipe
I’ve been all about mixing my own spice blends lately! I get to customize the blend to suit my preference, I know I’m using super fresh ingredients, and I also get to make the perfect amount for how often I use that particular blend. It’s been fun to use up the spices already in my pantry to create brand new additions to the collection without having to go to the grocery store!
There’s nothing like the smell of these spices bubbling together in the oven! It’s an aroma you’d be be happy to have linger in your home for days. I’ll even grab a pinch and sprinkle some of this apple pie spice over a big bowl of vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
- Cinnamon – Ground. Use 10-14 cinnamon sticks, about 4″ in length, if grinding fresh, but make sure you still measure it out because cinnamon sticks can come in different thickness.
- Nutmeg – Freshly grated or ground.
- Allspice – Ground. Use 6-8 whole, dried allspice berries if grinding fresh.
- Ginger – Ground.
- Cardamom – Ground. Use the seeds from 7-8 pods if grinding fresh.
How to make apple pie spice
- Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl. Transfer to a jar and store.
See, isn’t that so much easier than going to the store? Many of these spices are ones you likely already have in your pantry just waiting for a great use.
What to make with apple pie spice
Besides the obvious, homemade apple pie, I have some wonderful variations on this classic recipe that would be a perfect use for your new spice blend! Give these a try:
- The Best Apple Crisp
- Salted Caramel Apple Pie Cheesecake Bites
- Chocolate Apple Pie Monkey Bread
- Churro Apple Pie Cookies
- Apple Pie Taquitos
- Apple Pie Cake
- Mini Apple Pies in Wonton Wrappers
Some of these recipes call for apple pie spice, and some of them call for a mixture of spices. For the latter, you can replace all the spices with the same amount of your new apple pie spice.
How long do spices last?
Your blend will last 3-4 years if properly stored. Your spices will never go foul or rotten, they will simply lose potency and aroma after a few years. I like to keep a label on my jars with the date I mixed them so that I can accurately keep track of how old each blend is. Follow the directions below to keep your spice blend fresh as long as possible.
How to properly store spices
Transfer your homemade spice blend to an airtight container, preferably a jar with a twist-seal lid. This will help keep your blend fresh for longer. Store in a dark, cool place such as your pantry or a spice drawer.
If you’re storing your spices in a recently washed jar, you’ll have to make sure the jar is completely dry. Towel dry the jar, then leave it upside down in a drying rack for 20-30 minutes. This will allow airflow to completely rid the jar of any remaining moisture.
