Planning a family getaway means finding a destination that pleases both grown-ups and children. That means kid-friendly activities and accommodations, of course. But how about a sophisticated restaurant scene for the parents? Throw in some natural beauty, a historical setting, and enough indoor activities to keep everyone entertained. Sounds a lot like Clarksville, Tennessee.
This charming town is less than an hour northwest of Nashville, just across the border from Kentucky. It sits on the Cumberland River and is surrounded by trails, lakes, and one impressive cave to explore. The newly revitalized downtown is a destination itself, perfect for strolling, shopping, and grabbing a bite.
There’s a lot you can do as a family over a long weekend in this mid-size town. Here are some ideas for outdoor adventure, historical enlightening, with tons of kid-friendly fun.
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
Dunbar Cave State Park is home to an 8-mile-long cavern offering guided cave tours during the summer months. The cavern is a natural stunner, but also features Native American cave art that dates to the 14th century. After a trip through the cave, take advantage of the park’s hiking trails and abundant wildlife.
Clarksville’s 650 miles of navigable waterways provide excellent boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. If you’d rather stay on dry land, take advantage of the trails in the area. Start by exploring the Clarksville RiverWalk at McGregor Park, where you’ll find a 1.5-mile walking trail along the Cumberland River.
HISTORIC CHARM
Historic Collinsville Pioneer Settlement is a perfect spot for little explorers to get a taste of what life was like in rural Tennessee more than 100 years ago. Take a self-guided audio tour of the 16 restored log structures across 40 acres to get a sense of life both before and after the Civil War. Make sure to visit the wildlife center, which is home to native Tennessee plants and animals, as well as big game from other parts of North America.
To learn about the region’s history, visit the Customs House Museum, the second-largest general-interest museum in Tennessee. Housed in a building that dates to 1898, the museum’s architecture is an attraction on its own. It’s filled with interesting tidbits around every corner, including art, local history, and interactive kids exhibits, like the Bubble Cave.
Learn more about the area’s Civil War history at the Fort Defiance Interpretive Center and Park. This bluff-top earthen works fort one of the few that remains intact. The interpretive center offers a great history lesson about the battles fought here, as well as a look back on the earliest settlers in the region.
FUN FOR THE KIDS
When the kids are ready for some action, head to DEFY Clarksville Extreme Air Park, a trampoline park that gives them plenty of space to burn off that energy. The City Forum’s 120,000 square feet are filled with activities that kids (and most adults) love, including go-karting, bowling, laser tag, mini-golf, and an arcade. There’s even a play area for the younger kids. Downtown, let the kids roam around Downtown Commons, a full-block urban park with water features and an Imagination Playground.
CRAFT FOOD & BEVERAGE CULTURE
No matter what you decided to do, you’ve burned a lot of calories, so plan your meals to be part of your unique Clarksville experience. For traditional southern favorites, try Reggie’s BBQ with slow-smoked brisket, ribs, pork, and burnt ends. Nestled along the Cumberland River, the Catfish House is a regional favorite with hand-breaded filets and tempting homemade desserts.
At Silke’s Old World Breads, you’ll find freshly made bread, sandwiches, soups, and pizzas…even luscious German pastries. Fanelli’s Deli is new downtown and offers authentic Italian deli items. Yada on Franklin is another great lunch stop with sandwiches, smoothies, pastas, and wood-fired pizzas.
At dinner, make all the adults happy with a quiet evening at Edwards Steakhouse and its wide selection of prime steaks, seafood, and pasta. Yes, there’s even a kids’ menu.
Clarksville is also home to several breweries that can make for a great night of tastings. Start planning your trip at visitclarksvilletn.com.

‘Tis the season for holiday celebrations, big and small, Texas has it all. Whether you prefer quiet evenings fireside or nights on the town, it’s a great time to visit the Lone Star State. If you choose to hang your stockings in Texas this holiday season, don’t miss these Texas-style festivities!

TEXAS HOLIDAY PARADES

Kick off the holidays with parades across the state. Dubbed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade of Texas, the HEB Holiday Parade in Houston features hot air balloons, marching bands, cheerleaders and costumed characters. Further west, El Paso’s “uniquely Texan” Thanksgiving Day parade, the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade will celebrate “80 Years Around the World” for its 80th annual celebration.

Too busy cranking out that turkey? Join over 150,000 spectators the day after Thanksgiving for the Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony along the River Walk in San Antonio. Enjoy the Christmas music concert, the lighting of the River Walk and wave at Santa as his sleigh floats by.

Texas-sized Holiday Light Displays

For those looking for bright lights, small towns and big cities alike, host multiple holiday light spectaculars that almost outshine Texas’ big and bright stars. Most hail the name “trail of lights,” including the 52nd annual Austin Trail of Lights. Grab family and friends to sit by a traditional Yule Log, ride the Ferris Wheel, write a letter to Santa and more!

Just a few hours south in Houston, stroll through the Houston Zoo Lights for magical lights and musical entertainment from carolers and local musical groups. While most zoo creatures will be fast asleep, you can visit animals in the Reptile House, Kipp Aquarium, Bug House or Carruth National Encounters.

Outside of Houston, take a hay ride through the trail of lights at the biggest Christmas attraction in the state, Santa’s Wonderland in College Station, TX. Get the full experience with a visit with Santa in Santa’s Town, a nostalgic Texas Christmas Village. Capture the experience for your Instagram under the “God Bless Texas” light arch, next to the giant Texas flag light display or in the “Giant Texas Sized Snow Globe.”

If you’d rather stay within the warm comforts of your car, you can experience it all from the passenger seat while driving through the Gift of Lights at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas or the San Antonio Christmas Lights Fest.

ONE-OF-A-KIND CELEBRATIONS

The Lone Star State is also home to some unique celebrations. No stranger to beautiful displays, the Dallas Arboretum fills twelve Victorian gazebos with costumed characters, whimsical animals and winter scenes to bring The 12 Days of Christmas to life!

The Trains at NorthPark also call the Big D home. Experience all the trimmings of holiday train travel in more than 4,000 square feet of train themed environments. Nearby in Grapevine, adults can hop aboard the Christmas Wine Train and embrace the holiday spirit with festive treats and of course, wine! For a Western cowboy holiday, visit Christmas in the Stockyards in Fort Worth, TX. The one-day event takes place on December 2 and has western heritage activities for the entire family.

TEXAS HOLIDAY AT THE BEACH

Feeling more like a holiday beach bum than cowboy? Spend the holidays on the beaches of Galveston, Texas and be amazed by incredible ice sculptures at A Caribbean Christmas at Moody Gardens. The resort brings in a team of master ice carvers to sculpt two million pounds of ice into an undersea journey of tropical fish, eagle rays, turtles dolphins and more!

Also in Galveston, “Surf with Santa” at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Island’s Holiday Splash! Open weekends and select weekdays from November 25 to December 31. The holiday extravaganza also features a Snow Globe Float, Bahn Borealis Light Show, Ornament Factory, holiday characters and reindeer games!

MEXICAN CHRISTMAS FIESTAS

Luminarias, traditional Mexican Christmas lanterns, light the San Antonio River Walk for the Ford Fiesta De Las Luminarias. The century’s old tradition begins at dusk Friday, Saturday and Sunday from December 2-18.  Further north and along the border in El Paso, revel the Annual Posadas Celebration and Luminaria Lighting Festival. Posada, the Spanish for “inn” or “shelter,” is a traditional celebration recreating Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The presentation is followed by live music, the traditional Christmas Piñata ceremony, cultural dance presentations and the lighting of over 5,000 luminarias.

TEXAS NEW YEAR HOEDOWNS

Once you’ve made all your holiday stops, it’s time to ring in the new year, and what better place than the largest honky tonk in the world, Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth? This year the dance hall will feature two Texas-born acts, Eli Young Band and Green River Ordinance for New Year’s Eve at Billy Bob’s Texas.

If you’re looking to celebrate riverside, you can enjoy live music, carnival games and rides and festival food at the annual Celebrate San Antonio New Year’s Eve celebration. The event takes place downtown and ends the night with a fireworks extravaganza.

For the families, kids are welcome (more like encouraged) at the Children’s Museum of Houston annual Rockin’ New Year’s Noon Bash. Watch the New Year’s Eve Daytime Ball Drop after the countdown to noon after the New Year’s Noon Parade.

With a new World Heritage Designation, unforgettable culture, and its upcoming 300thanniversary, San Antonio is topping national and international travel lists for 2016. Today, Lonely Planet announced the addition of San Antonio to their “Best of the U.S. List” for 2016, adding to a growing collection of accolades from travel experts around the world.

Being designated by Lonely Planet’s U.S. authors and editors as one of the top 10 places to travel in America this year is another high-profile nod in a recent surge of praise for San Antonio. Celebrating the city’s ample opportunities to “admire bold public art and taste foodie-approved ‘Texas seafood,’” Budget Travel gave San Antonio the number two slot on its “Where to Go in 2016” list. San Antonio came in second only to Iceland, outranking Cuba, Los Angeles, Greece, the Galápagos Islands, and other international hotspots.

Travel + Leisure included San Antonio in its exclusive “Best Travel Destinations on the Planet for 2016,” citing the renovated River Walk and The Pearl as evidence of the city’s undeniable new “cool.” Ranked 18 out of 50 destinations, San Antonio clinched a top spot that underscores its growing global appeal.

Highlighting San Antonio’s engaging and easily accessible history emphasized by the recent UNESCO World Heritage designation of the city’s Spanish Missions, USA Today dubbed the city “One of the 14 Places in America You Have to Visit in 2016.”

Noting the DoSeum, other educational opportunities, and the J.W. Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort’s expanding River Bluff Water Experience, Family Vacation Critic included San Antonio in its “10 Best Family Travel Bets for 2016.”

Meanwhile, Orbitz named the city one of its “Top Destinations for 2016” as well. Tipping their hat to the city’s “bohemian wonders,” The National Student also ranked San Antonio as one of its “Top 20 Destinations” for the year.

“San Antonio has mastered the art of embracing the new while cherishing the old,” San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor says. “It’s how we can remain the iconic town we’ve always been as we become a distinctly modern city on the rise. Rich culture and a welcoming spirit will always define San Antonio, which is truly one of a kind.”

“Travelers from around the world are discovering San Antonio,” says San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director, Casandra Matej. “We are definitely seeing San Antonio’s popularity rise as a travel trend, but for us, we think it’s because we’ve maintained our timeless appeal. Whether people are looking for Hill Country resorts, an unforgettable experience along the River Walk, tours of our historic districts or exploring the U.S.’s newest World Heritage Site, they can find it here. There truly is an adventure around every street corner and bend of our river.”
