For those who have only dreamed of desert island honeymoons, far from civilization is the jewel in the Maldives crown offering the most romantic of celebratory escapes.

Located in the northernmost atoll of the breath-taking archipelago, JA Manafaru is the most remote understated destination in the Maldives, and one that honeymooners wishing to mark the moment, renew vows or simply honor each other with an island Elder’s blessing – have enjoyed for years.

Perfect soft sand beaches and crystal-clear waters surround this idyllic private island that benefits from remoteness more than any other Maldives barefoot luxury resort. JA Manafaru offers an unrivalled level of privacy presenting a pristine natural island to quietly explore.

With an extensive list of ceremony and blessing set-ups, every small detail can be taken care of for your special occasion. From bouquets to button-hole flowers and from cakes to cameras, the island team are on hand to ensure your big moment goes as silky smooth as the Egyptian cotton bedsheets you’ll later drift away in.

Aside from the big day, JA Manafaru offers an endless choice of romantic experiences you and your partner will never forget, the hardest decision is what to do first. Imagine how it feels to be Robinson Crusoe and enjoy an intimate castaway picnic on an uninhabited island. For those with sea legs – sail away on your own catamaran or take in a sunset dolphin cruise.

On request, candlelit beach dinners under the stars are arranged and why not adventure out with a night-snorkel amidst the most diverse tropical Sealife you will ever encounter.

With a secret wine cellar buried below the sealine into the coral island, ‘The Cellar’ is the dining experience to complete this ultimate romantic escape.  As the oldest and deepest wine cellar in the Maldives, this tiny stone labyrinth is made from volcanic Indonesian rock to ensure the perfect atmosphere and temperature for preserving some of the world’s finest wines.  By prior reservation only, the Executive Chef will prepare a tailored menu over several courses to suit all tastes.  For wine connoisseurs with extravagant palettes, why not select from classics including Rothschild and Margaux, finishing with a glass of Louis XIII, the most celebrated of French cognacs.

The multi-award-winning resort which is honored with ‘Trip Advisor Traveller’s Choice Award’ in 2023 plus the triple accolade of ‘Maldives, Indian Ocean, & World’s Leading Honeymoon Resort’ in 2022 by World Travel Awards, appeals to those with discerning taste for interior design. Unintrusive traditional villa architecture is met with a modern brush of restrained neutrality, inviting the positive energy flowing from the spa and throughout the island into your home from home.

Whether you wish to listen to nature’s calling from the tropical forest canopy at dusk, or the lapping of the ocean as you sleep, the selection of spacious beach villas, breath-taking over-water villas and palatial two and three-bedroom residences, each with their secluded private pool (or pools), presents a choice for everyone – and for every occasion.

Walmart and Getaway, a health and wellness hospitality company on a mission to make space in the world for free time, announced a new partnership that helps guests live better by aiming to make traveling to nature even easier and convenient.
The new alliance, which designates Walmart as Getaway’s first official retail partner, will introduce innovative offerings for guests starting this fall such as The General Store by Walmart, opening at select Getaway Outposts.
General Store by Walmart
The General Store by Walmart, a mini-retail experience at select Getaway Outposts, will include seasonal products, sourced from Walmart and curated by the outdoor experts at Getaway.
Items may include hiking gear, leisure activities and campfire equipment including FujiFilm Camera, Lodge Cast Iron Skillet, Pendleton Outdoor Blanket and Burt’s Bees lip balm to name a few.

At the time of check in for the next six months, guests will also receive Welcome Kits, which will include ingredients to make the ultimate camping treat, s’mores.
Awesome Locations
The General Store will also feature quality goods from small businesses within the community, furthering Getaway and Walmart’s commitment to supporting local communities.

Additional retail General Stores will open through the end of the year at Getaway Machimoodus in Moodus, CT; Getaway Big Bear in Running Springs, CA; Getaway Western Catskills in Roscoe, NY; and Getaway Ozark Highlands in Osceola, MO.
“At Getaway, our mission is to help people disconnect and spend time in nature,” said Carlos Becil, Chief Experience Officer at Getaway. “In partnering with Walmart, we are able to amplify our efforts to a larger audience and provide our guests with more free time, helping them prepare for their stays and enjoy the comforts of nature once they arrive.”
Items on sale at The General Store by Walmart will also be available on Walmart.com via a Getaway shopping page, walmart.com/shop/getaway, for guests to shop in advance of their visit.
Getaway guests who visit any Outpost over the next year will also receive a complimentary Walmart+ trial.
“Walmart’s partnership with Getaway furthers our mission to help people Live Better no matter where they are,” said Casey Schlaybaugh, Vice President, Brand Marketing, Walmart U.S.
“We are going beyond just saving people money by enabling guests to maximize Getaway’s experience and empowering them to spend more quality time with those who matter most.”
Getaway offers guests disconnected stays in nature located less than a two-hour drive from major cities across the country. As a result of continued demand, Getaway, which has averaged above 84% occupancy over the year across Outposts, recently announced new Outposts opening, amounting to 28 total locations before the end of 2022.

Things are heating up in Scottsdale and we’re not just talking about our triple-digit, prime-for-pool-lounging temperatures. With unbeatable values and so much that’s new to see and to do, travelers would be smart to make hay while the sun shines (although we have that year-round).

RESORT VIEWS
THE BIG NEWS: Scottsdale summers are H-O-T. But while temperatures climb to triple digits, resort rates dip to as much as 60 percent off, DJs heat up the pool party scene, kids splash around to their hearts’ content, and the spa deals beckon for relaxation, making Scottsdale the ultimate summer vacation spot. ItsThatHot.com is a one-stop shop for trip planning; whether that means fun for the whole family, resetting with rest and rejuvenation or letting loose as the life of the party.
FIVE SUMMER STAYS:
Westin Kierland Resort & Spa: The Camp Kierland package, with rates starting from $169 plus a $50 nightly resort credit, allows families to enjoy Kierland FlowRider Surf Camp, a lazy river, stargazing, campfire s’mores and more.
The Scott Resort & Spa: Rates start at only $99 at the newly renovated, Old Havana-style resort, steps from Old Town and poised for the perfect summer Instagram shots by the pool or at the trendy Canal Club restaurant and bar.
Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia: Nothing says relaxation quite like a fee-free stay, complete with an enticing lineup of spa specials and culinary experiences, and breathtaking poolside views of Camelback Mountain. Rates start at $135 at this quiet and romantic resort, reminiscent of an Andalusian village.
Hotel Valley Ho: Rates start at just $99 at this mid-century modern gem right in the heart of Old Town. Lounge at the signature OH Pool and party on with Frosé Friday, plus Saturday and Sunday DJ entertainment and drink specials.
Embassy Suites by Hilton Scottsdale Resort: There’s something for the whole family with the Splash into Summer Package, with rates starting at $109. Kids will flip for dive-in movies and barbecues at the pool on Saturday nights while mom and dad enjoy poolside cocktails.
ICYMI: Just opened in February is Castle Hot Springs, a Westroc Hospitality property and Arizona’s only member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Billed as a tranquil adult retreat, the resort embraces a “Digital Detox” philosophy and offers 12 Spring Bungalows, 525 square feet each, and 19 Sky View Cabins, 378 square feet each. Amenities include private terraces with telescopes for stargazing and piping directly from the nearby natural hot springs into oversized tubs.
CULINARY SCENE
THE BIG DISH: In March, a sixth wine tasting room landed in Old Town Scottsdale and began pouring. Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of rock bands Tool and A Perfect Circle, opened Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room & Osteria representing his northern Arizona wineries, Caduceus Cellars, Puscifer canned wines, and Merkin Vineyards.
SIX MORE BITES:
Known for her locally sourced, elevated veggie creations, Chef Charleen Badman of Scottsdale’s FnB Restaurant was named James Beard Foundation’s 2019 Best Chef: Southwest this month, following five consecutive JBF nominations.
Drunk Munk, a tiki-inspired bar and restaurant, opened in Old Town in March and transports diners and cocktail enthusiasts to an island oasis. On the menu, find sushi rolls, flaming pu pu platters, and tiki-themed drinks (read: the Sandy Pants and Alota Colada).
Tocaya Organica, the SoCal-inspired modern Mexican restaurant, unveiled its second location at Scottsdale Fashion Square May 5, serving up health-conscious and bold-flavored dishes like the Guiltless Gluten-Free Burrito.
Bringing major contemporary-cool vibes in an unsuspecting spot is Hush Public House, just opened in February. Find dishes ranging from small plates like hush puppies and halibut crudo, to swordfish steak and Italian beef.
Keeping visitors cool in the Scottsdale summer heat, the subterranean wine cellar at LON’s at The Hermosa Inn – typically only available for private events – will open May 30-Sept. 15 for parties of two or more.
Talavera at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, is inviting Latin food lovers to experience the flavors of Peru, Brazil, Argentina and more with a new monthly interactive dinner series beginning June 13.
THINGS TO DO:
Just last month, breakthrough concept Wonderspaces opened in Scottsdale, immediately captivating and mesmerizing locals and visitors alike. The current show, “Point of View,” will run through the summer season and showcases works by 13 artists from around the world, including a digital painting installation and a virtual reality dinner party. Visitors can enjoy food and beverages within the 80-minute show while exploring topics such as power, religion, time and reality through these experiential installations. At 16,000 square feet inside Scottsdale Fashion Square, this is Wonderspaces’ first permanent location and the first of many traveling art shows planned for the Scottsdale venue.

‘Tis the season for holiday celebrations, big and small, Texas has it all. Whether you prefer quiet evenings fireside or nights on the town, it’s a great time to visit the Lone Star State. If you choose to hang your stockings in Texas this holiday season, don’t miss these Texas-style festivities!

TEXAS HOLIDAY PARADES

Kick off the holidays with parades across the state. Dubbed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade of Texas, the HEB Holiday Parade in Houston features hot air balloons, marching bands, cheerleaders and costumed characters. Further west, El Paso’s “uniquely Texan” Thanksgiving Day parade, the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade will celebrate “80 Years Around the World” for its 80th annual celebration.

Too busy cranking out that turkey? Join over 150,000 spectators the day after Thanksgiving for the Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony along the River Walk in San Antonio. Enjoy the Christmas music concert, the lighting of the River Walk and wave at Santa as his sleigh floats by.

Texas-sized Holiday Light Displays

For those looking for bright lights, small towns and big cities alike, host multiple holiday light spectaculars that almost outshine Texas’ big and bright stars. Most hail the name “trail of lights,” including the 52nd annual Austin Trail of Lights. Grab family and friends to sit by a traditional Yule Log, ride the Ferris Wheel, write a letter to Santa and more!

Just a few hours south in Houston, stroll through the Houston Zoo Lights for magical lights and musical entertainment from carolers and local musical groups. While most zoo creatures will be fast asleep, you can visit animals in the Reptile House, Kipp Aquarium, Bug House or Carruth National Encounters.

Outside of Houston, take a hay ride through the trail of lights at the biggest Christmas attraction in the state, Santa’s Wonderland in College Station, TX. Get the full experience with a visit with Santa in Santa’s Town, a nostalgic Texas Christmas Village. Capture the experience for your Instagram under the “God Bless Texas” light arch, next to the giant Texas flag light display or in the “Giant Texas Sized Snow Globe.”

If you’d rather stay within the warm comforts of your car, you can experience it all from the passenger seat while driving through the Gift of Lights at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas or the San Antonio Christmas Lights Fest.

ONE-OF-A-KIND CELEBRATIONS

The Lone Star State is also home to some unique celebrations. No stranger to beautiful displays, the Dallas Arboretum fills twelve Victorian gazebos with costumed characters, whimsical animals and winter scenes to bring The 12 Days of Christmas to life!

The Trains at NorthPark also call the Big D home. Experience all the trimmings of holiday train travel in more than 4,000 square feet of train themed environments. Nearby in Grapevine, adults can hop aboard the Christmas Wine Train and embrace the holiday spirit with festive treats and of course, wine! For a Western cowboy holiday, visit Christmas in the Stockyards in Fort Worth, TX. The one-day event takes place on December 2 and has western heritage activities for the entire family.

TEXAS HOLIDAY AT THE BEACH

Feeling more like a holiday beach bum than cowboy? Spend the holidays on the beaches of Galveston, Texas and be amazed by incredible ice sculptures at A Caribbean Christmas at Moody Gardens. The resort brings in a team of master ice carvers to sculpt two million pounds of ice into an undersea journey of tropical fish, eagle rays, turtles dolphins and more!

Also in Galveston, “Surf with Santa” at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Island’s Holiday Splash! Open weekends and select weekdays from November 25 to December 31. The holiday extravaganza also features a Snow Globe Float, Bahn Borealis Light Show, Ornament Factory, holiday characters and reindeer games!

MEXICAN CHRISTMAS FIESTAS

Luminarias, traditional Mexican Christmas lanterns, light the San Antonio River Walk for the Ford Fiesta De Las Luminarias. The century’s old tradition begins at dusk Friday, Saturday and Sunday from December 2-18.  Further north and along the border in El Paso, revel the Annual Posadas Celebration and Luminaria Lighting Festival. Posada, the Spanish for “inn” or “shelter,” is a traditional celebration recreating Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The presentation is followed by live music, the traditional Christmas Piñata ceremony, cultural dance presentations and the lighting of over 5,000 luminarias.

TEXAS NEW YEAR HOEDOWNS

Once you’ve made all your holiday stops, it’s time to ring in the new year, and what better place than the largest honky tonk in the world, Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth? This year the dance hall will feature two Texas-born acts, Eli Young Band and Green River Ordinance for New Year’s Eve at Billy Bob’s Texas.

If you’re looking to celebrate riverside, you can enjoy live music, carnival games and rides and festival food at the annual Celebrate San Antonio New Year’s Eve celebration. The event takes place downtown and ends the night with a fireworks extravaganza.

For the families, kids are welcome (more like encouraged) at the Children’s Museum of Houston annual Rockin’ New Year’s Noon Bash. Watch the New Year’s Eve Daytime Ball Drop after the countdown to noon after the New Year’s Noon Parade.

Madison Avenue is gearing up for the holidays, and the highlight is the 32nd Annual Miracle on Madison Avenue on December 1 – a New York Holiday Tradition! At this time of year, many out-of-towners and metro residents arrive in Manhattan to do their shopping, see the sights, the lights, the holiday trees and windows. Madison Avenue has everything they could want in a glorious 29-block walk of luxury shopping, 5-star dining and the world’s premier hotels, nightspots, spas and art.

On Saturday, December 1, Miracle on Madison Avenue will reappear on New York’s most luxurious shopping destination for its 32nd annual shopping event. Miracle on Madison Avenue is a day for shoppers and visitors to check off their holiday gift lists, as 20 percent of the day’s sales will benefit The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Pediatric Programs. The Society of MSK is a volunteer led organization that works to ensure the wellbeing of patients, raise funds for cancer research and treatment, and provide public education on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer.

Organized by the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), shoppers will experience the magic of Miracle on Madison Avenue with a merry embrace from MSK’s beloved therapy dogs, the Caring Canines, and Victorian costumed carolers strolling up and down Madison spreading good cheer. Participating stores are prepared to warmly greet customers with holiday treats, champagne toasts and in-store festivities. “Madison Avenue boutiques always feature the most sought after holiday gifts, but on Miracle Saturday, purchase of those gifts directly supports the care of children treated by the extraordinary team at MSK,” said Matthew Bauer, President of the Madison Avenue BID. “This 32 year Madison Avenue tradition is remarkable not only for its longevity, but for the decades-long commitment that our boutiques have for both their clients and for children in need.”

Miracle on Madison Avenue will begin at 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. between 57th and 86th Street. Shoppers are encouraged to share their holiday shopping experience on Twitter by using the hashtag #MiracleonMadison. For more information on the festivities and the complete list of participating store, restaurants and galleries visit http://www.madisonavenuebig.org

Visitors to San Antonio have seen many changes over the last 25 years, but one thing that has remained constant is the beauty, rustic -elegance and Texas friendliness experienced at Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa. As the city embarks on the Tricentennial celebration of its founding, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa is also celebrating a seminal moment in its storied history—25 years of creating cherished memories for visitors from throughout the San Antonio community and the world.

HISTORY

On February 24, 1993, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa became the first destination resort in Texas and the nation’s first resort designed around living history—the Rogers-Wiseman Ranch, a family-owned property and working cattle ranch that stretched across thousands of acres. For more than 100 years before the resort opened its doors, the Rogers-Wiseman family cultivated the Hill Country land the ranch operated on, offered true Texas hospitality to visitors and raised three generations of family members on the thriving ranch.

AMAZING

From 1887 purchaser D.G. Rogers, to his prodigal son Henry and his wife Mary, to their daughter Blanche and her husband, Papa Ed, the history of the family is woven throughout the resort.

NATURAL BEAUTY

Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa honors its heritage by maintaining the integrity and natural beauty of the 300 acres surrounding the property, and by offering a welcoming, relaxing and casually-elegant destination with world-class services for visitors and locals alike. Guests can still see the Rogers-Wiseman family influences and memorabilia throughout the property, like the original bill of sale from the 1880s and historic family photos that line the hallways, and the ranch’s ‘99’ cattle brand on jars of the resort’s house-made fire-roasted salsa.

“Our history is what sets us apart and makes us a destination unlike any other. By honoring the family who preserved and made this breathtaking setting possible, we’re able to offer an incredible experience that allows guests to unwind and reconnect with what truly matters—the relationships and memories we share,” said General Manager Joe Hindsley. “Two of the property’s most iconic spaces for socializing are named after family members. Aunt Mary’s lawn is where families gather on blankets during the summer to watch movies under the stars, and Henry’s Hollow, named after the ranch founder’s son who was known for merrymaking, is where we toast s’mores over a roaring fire each night with new and old friends.”

WOODBINE DEVELOPMENT

Before the resort ever opened its doors, when it was only open land full of grazing cattle, Dallas-based Woodbine Development Corporation recognized that the history of the land and the family should inform and inspire the look, feel and experience found on property. Serving as the developer/owner, Woodbine brought the resort to life in close collaboration with the family, who maintains an interest in the property to this day through the Rogers-Wiseman Family Interests.

“Several decades ago, we never dreamed our early conversations with the Wiseman family would give way to a partnership that would become the foundation for this award-winning Texas resort,” said John Scovell, founder and chairman of Woodbine.

PERFECT SOUTH TEXAS GETAWAY

“Over the years and still today, Hyatt Regency Hill Country’s success has remained deeply rooted in relationships cultivated during vacations, meetings, milestone celebrations and even workdays,” Scovell added. “This destination has become part of the stories of countless people who have come here to learn, explore, make memories and make a living. This property is also very special to Woodbine’s story and our legacy with Hyatt, and we feel honored to be part of this resort’s past and present and look forward to its future.”

RENOVATIONS AND MORE

Throughout its history the resort has undergone renovations and expansions to maintain the level of excellence guests have come to know and expect from the property. Today the resort boasts a five-acre water park with a FlowRider® wave machine, two-story waterslide, four swimming pools, and lazy river styled after the Guadalupe River; the Hill Country Golf Club, a sprawling 200-acre, 27-hole championship course designed by Arthur Hills and Associates with diverse terrain, lush hillsides, tree-shaded plateaus and tranquil ponds; and Windflower–The Hill Country Spa, a full-service spa set in an 1880s-style ranch house, featuring 21 treatment rooms offering a barn full of bliss to all who pass through its doors. The 300-acre property features 500 guestrooms and suites that are classically styled with Hill Country touches and modern amenities, and more than 100,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor meeting space, including three ballrooms and a newly-renovated, glass-enclosed outdoor pavilion.

“In 2018 we celebrate 25 years of being a part of the cherished Texas tales of San Antonians and families all over the world,” Hindsley said. “We look forward to the next chapter in our story and ensuring guests create beloved memories here for generations to come.”

What a journey! 25 years ago, Hotel Guide of San Antonio was launched. The goal: target travelers before they ventured to the Alamo City by direct mailing to 10,000 travel agents each edition.

Now, our magazine covers the world, is direct emailed to 24 MILLION travelers yearly, seen online at www.thehotelguide.com and across our social media networks. To say that we have grown is an understatement!

None of this would be possible had it not been for my former partner and original visionary of The Hotel Guide – Robert Ruggiero. His steadfast sense of detail and creativity launched a “pet project” of his into a global platform. Simply…amazing.

This year we plan on commemorating as much of our history as we can but also focusing on the terrific future that lies ahead. This edition is a testament to that. We have a new logo, new brand, new design. Why? Because it matters. 25 years is a long time and our readers deserve to always have the best of us.

This edition again covers some of Texas grandest escapes – including a feature on West Texas and another 25th Anniversary celebration in the Hyatt Hill Country Resort.

Don’t forget to check out our “Destinations” section along with our updated “Wellness Travel” section. You won’t want to miss that informative content.
