U.S. hotel leisure travel revenue is projected to end 2022 14% above 2019 levels, while hotel business travel revenue is expected to come within 1% of 2019 levels, according to a new analysis released today by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and Kalibri Labs.

The projections are not adjusted for inflation, and real hotel revenue recovery will likely take several more years.

Post-pandemic recovery remains uneven, particularly in many major cities and destinations where business travel continues to lag. Among the top 50 U.S. markets, 80% are projected to see hotel leisure travel revenue exceed 2019 levels, but just 40% are expected reach that milestone for business travel revenue. Many urban markets, which rely heavily on business from events and group meetings, are still on the road to recovery.

The uptick in revenue is leading to historic career opportunities for hotel employees, with more than 115,000 hotel jobs currently open across the nation. Hotels are offering potential hires a host of incentives to fill vacancies—81% have increased wages, 64% are offering greater flexibility with hours, and 35% have expanded benefits, according to a September 2022 AHLA member survey.

“The hotel industry continues its march toward recovery, but we still have a way to go before we fully get there,” said AHLA President & CEO Chip Rogers. “That’s why AHLA remains focused on working with members, lawmakers and stakeholders in markets that are rebounding more slowly to ensure the full return of meetings, conferences, and group travel in addition to leisure and business travel. At the same time, we are continuing to grow the industry’s talent pipeline by highlighting the unprecedented career opportunities hotels are offering. Thanks to higher wages, better benefits, and more flexibility and opportunities for advancement, there has never been a better time to work at a hotel.”

To help hotels fill open jobs and raise awareness of the hotel industry’s 200+ career pathways, the AHLA Foundation’s “A Place to Stay” multi-channel advertising campaign is now active in 14 cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, and Tampa. For more info on the campaign, visit thehotelindustry.com.

AHLA recently completed a series of “Hospitality is Working” events in major cities across the country. The campaign has sought to increase business and leisure travel while highlighting the hotel industry’s strong commitment to investing in its workforce, protecting employees and guests, and supporting local communities.

Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta, a lifestyle hotel located along the edge of Lenox Square, has officially opened its doors. This 15-story hotel features 218 guestrooms, including seven suites, two dining concepts from James Beard Award-winning chef Hugh Acheson and more than 3,700 square feet of meeting and event spaces. Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta provides savvy travelers a launchpad for exploration, giving travelers an opportunity to discover the magic of Atlanta’s iconic cultural and entertainment venues. The property was developed by Songy Highroads and designed by Sawyer & Company in collaboration with The Johnson Studio at COOPER CARRY.

INTUITIVE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PLACES

The design team took a holistic approach with Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta, keeping the notion of duality top of mind throughout the public and private spaces. The property’s design was inspired by the history of Georgia’s pottery industry, with playful nods to earthenware and earthy color schemes complemented by bold graphics and eye-catching textures. When entering the hotel, guests are greeted with a floral stenciled wall accentuating a light installation of woven pendant shades in oblong shapes mimicking those of pottery. Behind the check-in desk is a towering terracotta wall. The elevator doors open to vibrant sunkissed colors resembling the glazing on pottery in a three-part installation by award-winning Canadian artist Claire Desjardins titled Daydreamer. On one of the hotel’s exterior walls sits a shareworthy mural by artist Lenia Castro of Buckhead Murals, offering perspective on the development of Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

The guestrooms spotlight Georgia’s deep artistic history with wallpaper mimicking crackled glazing on pottery, area rugs inspired by the organic shape and glaze of earthenware and a natural hues of sienna. The Buckhead neighborhood’s status as a fashion destination is reflected in the stylish headboards, which feature a chevron fabric pattern. From clean lines to modern furnishings in rooms and suites with 10-foot high ceilings, these pet-friendly spaces feature floor-to-ceiling windows inviting the natural light and views of the Atlanta skyline into the space. Guestrooms average 400 square feet with suites exceeding 850 square feet, and each room has a variety of intuitive amenities including a 65″ flat-screen LCD HDTV; a cozy, hooded bathrobe; exclusive Beekind® – high-end, socially conscious bath amenities; and Drybar® – salon-quality hair dryer. Guests also have access to a bright and spacious fitness center featuring Peloton bikes and offering panoramic views of Buckhead’s neighborhood and skyline, as well as an outdoor heated plunge pool with pool sun deck located on the second floor.

EXCEPTIONAL DINING EXPERIENCES

Two unique dining options, led by James Beard Award-winning chef and author Hugh Acheson, owner of Five & Ten and Empire State South, and Christopher Wilkins, owner of Root Baking Co. and Pizza Jeans, are part of the Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta experience.

Located on the ground floor, Mount Royal, a Montreal-style steakhouse, brings the culinary complexity of Quebec to Buckhead with ingredients sourced from southeast Georgia. Offering breakfast, lunch, dinner as well contactless in-room delivery, the restaurant is designed to blend modern and classic touches. Diners enter through a steel archway in the hotel’s lobby and are greeted by a textured stone and aged bronze bar, along with reclaimed wood beams, hand-stitched patchwork, engraved nickel and stretched buffalo accents. Wraparound floor-to-ceiling windows, green-glazed tiles, and a stone mosaic stool complete the indoor dining area, and on the outdoor terrace, a firepit features a glass mosaic mural.

On the 15th floor rooftop is Spaceman, an indoor-outdoor lounge featuring craft cocktails and a seasonal menu of shareable dishes as well as an outdoor TV area, yard games and uninterrupted views of Atlanta’s skyline. At the center of Spaceman is the expansive bar in front of floor-to-ceiling windows and beneath an overhead sculpture creating a halo effect best experienced at sunset.

MEETING & EVENT SPACES

Located on the second floor, the indoor meeting and event spaces feature more than 3,700 square feet of customizable arrangements. Each room is decorated with accent wall coverings, rich hues and art pieces furthering the property’s design themes. The walls are also decorated with blue folded leaves, an abstract version of clay pottery fragments, and faces, all of which are playful expressions of clay, pottery, and sculpture. Event rooms have a built-in wet bar, intuitive technology, floor-to-ceiling windows, lounge seating and stunning views.

Hyatt Centric Buckhead Atlanta is situated along the edge of the Lenox Square shopping center; PATH400, a Greenway multi-use trail for bicyclists and pedestrians; Shops Around Lenox and Phipps Plaza. The hotel is conveniently accessible to corporate office parks, dining, nightlife and entertainment.

Inspired by the enduring spirit, culture and character of Nova Scotia and its people, Muir, Autograph Collection, officially opens its doors on December 10, 2021. Located in the new Queen’s Marque district on the Halifax Waterfront in the absolute centre of downtown, Muir is the first hotel in Nova Scotia to join Autograph Collection Hotels, a curated collection of the world’s most distinctive independent hotels, hand-selected for their inherent craft and distinct perspectives on design and hospitality.
“We are delighted to announce our opening on December 10 and are ready to welcome guests to an elevated hospitality experience that is truly ‘Born of this Place’,” said Eugénie Jason, General Manager, Muir, Autograph Collection.
Bold Architecture and Inspired Interiors Envisioned, developed and operated by The Armour Group Limited, and designed by celebrated Nova Scotian firm MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, Muir is a shining example of “Born of this Place” design – honouring character, materiality and heritage through the art of place-making. Throughout the property, the forms portray a contemporary marine, wharf-like design while materiality makes a connection to place – from local materials, including salt-and-pepper granite and sandstone, to Muntz metal, a copper alloy prominently used in shipbuilding. Together, these elements provide an indelible sense of place, resulting in a design that simply could not exist anywhere else.
Renderings by Studio Munge
Muir’s interiors and furnishings are the work of internationally-recognized designer Alessandro Munge of Canada’s Studio Munge. Throughout the hotel, custom furniture and lighting – designed and crafted in Canada – reflect a modern interpretation of East Coast design. Rooms and suites are richly textured with curved white oak walls and plank flooring – a subtle nod to ocean voyages. Gathering spaces are anchored by soft cove lighting and lively fireplaces. Statement pieces from local artists are proudly displayed throughout the property, including commissioned landscape paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics and tapestries.
Distinct Amenities and Experiences
Muir’s curated collection of amenities includes the ultra-premium wellness centre, Windward Wellness, where high-performance fitness equipment, vitality spa pool and halotherapy salt room encourage guests to rest and rejuvenate. Little Wing, a 36-foot Morris yacht and Reach, Muir’s high-speed motorboat, are available for guests to charter and explore the harbour and get a view of this much-loved city locals know best.
Elevated Cuisine and Cocktails
Inspired by this region’s natural bounty, Drift is a culinary love letter to Nova Scotia’s land, people and history. Featuring modern, elevated takes on classic Atlantic Canadian dishes, Drift’s culinary vision is driven by celebrated Canadian Chef Anthony Walsh and Chef de Cuisine Jamie MacAulay. As distinct as Muir itself, Drift is thoughtfully designed for entertaining colleagues or quiet work at the spacious bar. The dining room is expansive yet comfortable, with detailed craftsmanship and premium materiality complemented by an outdoor patio with stunning waterfront views. Floor to ceiling marble fluted fireplaces, leather-wrapped walls, bespoke furnishings and soft lighting invite guests to linger and connect.
BKSMuir’s secret speakeasy, is an enclave of curved wooden walls, muted marble and luxurious banquettes. Open to hotel guests and for private events, BKS offers a discreet setting for historically-inspired premium cocktails and unique small plates, which are best savoured on the harbourside private terrace with the most desirable views in the city.
Memorable Meetings and Gatherings
Muir offers one-of-kind settings for business events, celebrations and gatherings. In addition to conversation-starting art, the 1,200-square-foot True Colours Art Gallery offers a dramatic harbour-facing backdrop for exclusive gatherings. The Wardroom – complimentary for Muir guests – is a fully-appointed, private executive meeting space that can hold up to six guests. The Watch, embraced by the sea on three sides, is a 2,100-square-foot event space featuring bespoke furniture, an art collection, two private bars and a private tasting room.
The Heart of Halifax
Muir is part of the Queen’s Marque district, a cultural and community destination for locals and visitors to Atlantic Canada. The bustling district encompasses vibrant restaurants, shops, nightlife, offices and luxury residences, all set against a striking harbour backdrop.”We are thrilled to announce the opening of Muir, a refined, distinctly Nova Scotian hospitality experience that represents a contemporary Nova Scotia,” said Scott Armour McCrea, CEO and President of The Armour Group. From an impeccable waterfront location, carefully appointed rooms with thoughtful amenities, to Nova Scotian art, design and dining, Muir establishes an authentic “Sense of Place” that invites guests to forge a meaningful connection with the province and its people.Autograph Collection Hotels is a member of Marriott Bonvoy, the award-winning travel program from Marriott International. Nevada welcomes stargazers, thespians, kayakers, exotic car enthusiasts and pool partygoers with a summer of events and Nevada adventure. With star parties in Ely, drag races in Fallon, and world-class performances throughout Reno-Tahoe, summer in Nevada combines desert heat with a splash of entertainment. Here’s how to get outside and explore the state this season.
Stargazing and Stripes
Not only does Nevada have some of the most impressive Fourth of July fireworks shows in the nation — including the acclaimed Lights on the Lake in Lake Tahoe and various rooftop displays throughout Las Vegas — it also has some of the darkest skies in the U.S. Jump aboard the Ely Star Train with the Dark Rangers of Great Basin National Park for a guided astronomy tour. Tours are available at 7:30 p.m. July 12, Aug. 2 and Sept. 6. Named an International Dark Sky Park in 2016, Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada boasts weekly Dark Ranger programs, telescope viewing sessions and full-moon hikes. Don’t miss the 10th annual Astronomy Festival Sept. 26-28. On your way out, take a trip through the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park, just 10 miles south of Ely, for even darker skies and clearer views. The six beehive-shaped charcoal ovens were used in the late 1800s to help process silver and provide shelter for travelers.

Art and Cantaloupes
Reno’s 23rd annual Artown festival, July 1-31, showcases artists and musicians with more than 500 events and 100 workshops around the community. Events range from music, dance and theater, to film, history, literary events and workshops. Headliners at the Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch include Pink Martini, July 9 — an international, 12-piece orchestra fusing classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop music; Sheléa, July 18 — a traditional pop, jazz, R&B and soul vocalist; The SteelDrivers July 25 — a Nashville-based bluegrass band; and the Koresh Dance Company, July 26.
For a perfect midsummer night’s eve, gather lakeside at Sand Harbor State Park for the annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Aug. 5 to July 25, featuring “The Taming of the Shrew” and Million Dollar Quartet. Catch the natural alpenglow, a reddish luminescence across the high Sierra, as the sun sets behind the outdoor amphitheater.
One of Nevada’s longest-running agricultural festivals, the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival, celebrates the area’s special Hearts O’ Gold cantaloupe and other farm-fresh delights, Aug. 25. Enjoy cantaloupe-flavored everything, live music, family events (including a cornhole tournament), and Cantaloupe 5k and Fun Run.
Full Throttle Summer
Rev your engines— it’s octane season. With classic car shows and record-breaking speeds, Nevada’s raceways come alive this summer. Don’t miss Bonneville Speed Week on the Bonneville Salt Flats, (just a 15-minute drive from West Wendover), where racers attempt to break land-speed records in hot rods, roadsters, motorcycles, streamliners, diesel trucks and more.
In Fallon, you can cheer on experienced and junior drag racers at the Top Gun Speedway through September. Ever want to get your hands on a Lamborghini? For exotic car lovers, head to Speed Vegas where guests can race Ferraris, Porches and other luxury vehicles around a 1.5-mile banked track. For classic car connoisseurs, Hot August Nights returns to Reno, Sparks and Virginia City in August. Poodle skirts and cuffed jeans are back in fashion at this weeklong celebration of rock’n’roll and yesteryear as thousands of classic cars parade the streets.
America’s Best Pool Parties
For a sizzling summer experience, head to the neon oasis of Las Vegas for its iconic daytime pool parties. Featuring chart-topping DJs, private VIP cabanas and bikini contests, Las Vegas’ pools provide an adult summer playground that ensures the party doesn’t have to end when the sun comes up. Sip handcrafted piña coladas and float on a giant inflatable flamingo at the new NoMad Las Vegas rooftop pool. Shower in champagne and listen to beats by Calvin Harris at Wet Republic, the longest running day club in Las Vegas.
Indulge in over-the-top entertainment and beach chic attire at Encore Beach Club at the Wynn, with live entertainment including David Guetta and The Chainsmokers. Take a dip in the Marquee Dayclub, one of three pools at The Cosmopolitan; or dig your toes in Mandalay Bay’s 2,700 tons of sand surrounding a quarter-mile-long lazy river.
New Walker River State Recreation Area
Despite being known for its expansive desert terrain and rugged mountain ranges, Nevada is also home to lesser known alpine lakes, meandering rivers and cool blue desert oases. Among them, the 62-mile Walker River weaves throughout the Great Basin Area in western Nevada. The new Walker River State Recreation Area is the result of several land acquisitions, which now contains four recreation units: the Pitchfork Ranch, Rafter 7 Ranch, Flying M Ranch and the Nine Mile Ranch. Among them, the Elbow section of the Nine Mile Ranch and the Pitchfork Ranch are the first to open to the public. Visitors can camp, hunt, fish, go off-roading or enjoy a family float along the East Fork’s Class I and Class II rapids.

‘Tis the season for holiday celebrations, big and small, Texas has it all. Whether you prefer quiet evenings fireside or nights on the town, it’s a great time to visit the Lone Star State. If you choose to hang your stockings in Texas this holiday season, don’t miss these Texas-style festivities!

TEXAS HOLIDAY PARADES

Kick off the holidays with parades across the state. Dubbed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade of Texas, the HEB Holiday Parade in Houston features hot air balloons, marching bands, cheerleaders and costumed characters. Further west, El Paso’s “uniquely Texan” Thanksgiving Day parade, the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade will celebrate “80 Years Around the World” for its 80th annual celebration.

Too busy cranking out that turkey? Join over 150,000 spectators the day after Thanksgiving for the Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony along the River Walk in San Antonio. Enjoy the Christmas music concert, the lighting of the River Walk and wave at Santa as his sleigh floats by.

Texas-sized Holiday Light Displays

For those looking for bright lights, small towns and big cities alike, host multiple holiday light spectaculars that almost outshine Texas’ big and bright stars. Most hail the name “trail of lights,” including the 52nd annual Austin Trail of Lights. Grab family and friends to sit by a traditional Yule Log, ride the Ferris Wheel, write a letter to Santa and more!

Just a few hours south in Houston, stroll through the Houston Zoo Lights for magical lights and musical entertainment from carolers and local musical groups. While most zoo creatures will be fast asleep, you can visit animals in the Reptile House, Kipp Aquarium, Bug House or Carruth National Encounters.

Outside of Houston, take a hay ride through the trail of lights at the biggest Christmas attraction in the state, Santa’s Wonderland in College Station, TX. Get the full experience with a visit with Santa in Santa’s Town, a nostalgic Texas Christmas Village. Capture the experience for your Instagram under the “God Bless Texas” light arch, next to the giant Texas flag light display or in the “Giant Texas Sized Snow Globe.”

If you’d rather stay within the warm comforts of your car, you can experience it all from the passenger seat while driving through the Gift of Lights at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas or the San Antonio Christmas Lights Fest.

ONE-OF-A-KIND CELEBRATIONS

The Lone Star State is also home to some unique celebrations. No stranger to beautiful displays, the Dallas Arboretum fills twelve Victorian gazebos with costumed characters, whimsical animals and winter scenes to bring The 12 Days of Christmas to life!

The Trains at NorthPark also call the Big D home. Experience all the trimmings of holiday train travel in more than 4,000 square feet of train themed environments. Nearby in Grapevine, adults can hop aboard the Christmas Wine Train and embrace the holiday spirit with festive treats and of course, wine! For a Western cowboy holiday, visit Christmas in the Stockyards in Fort Worth, TX. The one-day event takes place on December 2 and has western heritage activities for the entire family.

TEXAS HOLIDAY AT THE BEACH

Feeling more like a holiday beach bum than cowboy? Spend the holidays on the beaches of Galveston, Texas and be amazed by incredible ice sculptures at A Caribbean Christmas at Moody Gardens. The resort brings in a team of master ice carvers to sculpt two million pounds of ice into an undersea journey of tropical fish, eagle rays, turtles dolphins and more!

Also in Galveston, “Surf with Santa” at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Island’s Holiday Splash! Open weekends and select weekdays from November 25 to December 31. The holiday extravaganza also features a Snow Globe Float, Bahn Borealis Light Show, Ornament Factory, holiday characters and reindeer games!

MEXICAN CHRISTMAS FIESTAS

Luminarias, traditional Mexican Christmas lanterns, light the San Antonio River Walk for the Ford Fiesta De Las Luminarias. The century’s old tradition begins at dusk Friday, Saturday and Sunday from December 2-18.  Further north and along the border in El Paso, revel the Annual Posadas Celebration and Luminaria Lighting Festival. Posada, the Spanish for “inn” or “shelter,” is a traditional celebration recreating Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The presentation is followed by live music, the traditional Christmas Piñata ceremony, cultural dance presentations and the lighting of over 5,000 luminarias.

TEXAS NEW YEAR HOEDOWNS

Once you’ve made all your holiday stops, it’s time to ring in the new year, and what better place than the largest honky tonk in the world, Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth? This year the dance hall will feature two Texas-born acts, Eli Young Band and Green River Ordinance for New Year’s Eve at Billy Bob’s Texas.

If you’re looking to celebrate riverside, you can enjoy live music, carnival games and rides and festival food at the annual Celebrate San Antonio New Year’s Eve celebration. The event takes place downtown and ends the night with a fireworks extravaganza.

For the families, kids are welcome (more like encouraged) at the Children’s Museum of Houston annual Rockin’ New Year’s Noon Bash. Watch the New Year’s Eve Daytime Ball Drop after the countdown to noon after the New Year’s Noon Parade.

Madison Avenue is gearing up for the holidays, and the highlight is the 32nd Annual Miracle on Madison Avenue on December 1 – a New York Holiday Tradition! At this time of year, many out-of-towners and metro residents arrive in Manhattan to do their shopping, see the sights, the lights, the holiday trees and windows. Madison Avenue has everything they could want in a glorious 29-block walk of luxury shopping, 5-star dining and the world’s premier hotels, nightspots, spas and art.

On Saturday, December 1, Miracle on Madison Avenue will reappear on New York’s most luxurious shopping destination for its 32nd annual shopping event. Miracle on Madison Avenue is a day for shoppers and visitors to check off their holiday gift lists, as 20 percent of the day’s sales will benefit The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Pediatric Programs. The Society of MSK is a volunteer led organization that works to ensure the wellbeing of patients, raise funds for cancer research and treatment, and provide public education on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer.

Organized by the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District (BID), shoppers will experience the magic of Miracle on Madison Avenue with a merry embrace from MSK’s beloved therapy dogs, the Caring Canines, and Victorian costumed carolers strolling up and down Madison spreading good cheer. Participating stores are prepared to warmly greet customers with holiday treats, champagne toasts and in-store festivities. “Madison Avenue boutiques always feature the most sought after holiday gifts, but on Miracle Saturday, purchase of those gifts directly supports the care of children treated by the extraordinary team at MSK,” said Matthew Bauer, President of the Madison Avenue BID. “This 32 year Madison Avenue tradition is remarkable not only for its longevity, but for the decades-long commitment that our boutiques have for both their clients and for children in need.”

Miracle on Madison Avenue will begin at 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. between 57th and 86th Street. Shoppers are encouraged to share their holiday shopping experience on Twitter by using the hashtag #MiracleonMadison. For more information on the festivities and the complete list of participating store, restaurants and galleries visit http://www.madisonavenuebig.org

What a journey! 25 years ago, Hotel Guide of San Antonio was launched. The goal: target travelers before they ventured to the Alamo City by direct mailing to 10,000 travel agents each edition.

Now, our magazine covers the world, is direct emailed to 24 MILLION travelers yearly, seen online at www.thehotelguide.com and across our social media networks. To say that we have grown is an understatement!

None of this would be possible had it not been for my former partner and original visionary of The Hotel Guide – Robert Ruggiero. His steadfast sense of detail and creativity launched a “pet project” of his into a global platform. Simply…amazing.

This year we plan on commemorating as much of our history as we can but also focusing on the terrific future that lies ahead. This edition is a testament to that. We have a new logo, new brand, new design. Why? Because it matters. 25 years is a long time and our readers deserve to always have the best of us.

This edition again covers some of Texas grandest escapes – including a feature on West Texas and another 25th Anniversary celebration in the Hyatt Hill Country Resort.

Don’t forget to check out our “Destinations” section along with our updated “Wellness Travel” section. You won’t want to miss that informative content.
