Hotel Milu Milano, a new design-led boutique hotel and the second outpost of the Milu brand, is now open in Milan’s dynamic Porta Venezia district. Just steps away from the iconic Porta Venezia gate, Hotel Milu Milano offers modern travellers an inspiring urban retreat that blends historical Milanese architecture with bold, contemporary interiors to curate a thoughtful sense of place.

Designed by acclaimed architect and designer Alex Meitlis, Hotel Milu Milano’s design is a love letter to modern Milan, as inspired by the site itself. A historic 19th-century Milanese building, with a previous life as the Mercure Milano Centro, Meitlis took the building back to its roots, restoring elements such as the property’s central staircase and exposing original brickwork across the building.

Each of the seven room categories – single, comfort double, superior double, deluxe double, deluxe twin, comfort triple and prestige quadruple – features a refined sense of minimalism, allowing individual design elements to take center stage. Nearly every detail of the property is site-specific, drawing on traditional Milanese materials, textiles, and colors. The 32 rooms feature Terrazzo flooring, wooden shutters, and mirrored walls, with vibrant colored glass accents of red, green, and pink throughout the bathrooms, creating a fresh and comfortable atmosphere.

Art is at the heart of the Milu brand, and Hotel Milu Milano is no exception, with striking canvases that welcome guests in the lobby and adorn each room, curated by artist Carmel Ilan. In the lobby, guests are greeted by pieces from her main body of work, inspired by the earth and the concept that a natural ingredient is necessary as the origin source for everything – even paper. In the rooms, artwork is from Ilan’s ‘Here and Now’ body of work, born out of the coronavirus pandemic, which is poetic, keen and concise with intimate works that express the contradiction between the desire to pull back and the need to burst out. The interplay of textures has been thoughtfully curated by Meitlis, who explored how mirrored walls meet exposed brickwork, creating a layered backdrop that highlights the artworks above.

Guests of Hotel Milu Milano will also have access to an all-day lounge, where complimentary wine, coffee, tea, and soft drinks foster a relaxed, communal atmosphere for unwinding or connecting with fellow travellers.

Hotel Milu Milano is now open at Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan, 12, 20129 Milano, Italy. For more information about Hotel Milu Milano, or to make a reservation, visit www.milumilano.com.

Have you ever wanted to stay in a place that is just steps from the hustle and bustle of one of the most amazing cities in the world, yet has the calming essence of a country retreat? Hotel Villa Olmi delivers just that!
This 62-room upscale property is nestled just on the outskirts of the vibrant streets of Florence in the residential suburb of Bagno a Ripoli. Surrounded by acres of lush greenery, the expansive grounds are composed of a main hotel, a historic villa and two delightful country-style homes.
To one side of this large estate is rolling hills. Another side is lined with groves of olives. The remaining land is occupied by a charming mixture of manicured lawns, wandering paths, geometric gardens and luscious flowering plants.
Aptly named after two giant elms in the garden (olmi means elm in Italian), Villa Olmi has a rich and storied history dating back to the early 1400’s.
History
Once a sprawling country residence for a wealthy Florentine family, the original farmhouse was destroyed in 1529 when Spanish troops laid siege to Florence.
Rebuilt not long after, the land was transferred to the Mozzi family, who also owned the most stately palazzo in all of Florence. It is likely that every visiting cardinal, ambassador and prince was hosted by the Mozzi clan.
The Mozzi family was well-known for their massive collection of great artworks, now displayed in museums around the world. It was this love of art that inspired Giulio dei Mozzi to update the property in 1781, when he commissioned artists to create stunning frescoes on the walls and ceilings. Uncovered in 2006, these incredible works of art have been restored for the guests to enjoy.
As time marched on, farming was halted on the property and the country villa was abandoned. In 1999, the estate was purchased by the Lotti family who undertook the mammoth task of restoring the buildings and land.
Using expert craftsmen employing traditional techniques, the frescoes, vaulted brick wine cellar, secret underground passage and elegant gardens were brought back to life. Now guests can wander the grounds just as they were in their 18th-century glory.
The Three Faces of Olmi
One of the things I love most about Hotel Villa Olmi is that there are three distinct properties located on the grounds: La Fattoria (the farmhouse), La Colonica (the country house) and La Villa (the historic villa). Each has a different personality and appeal.
La Fattoria (the farmhouse)
The main hotel is called La Fattoria because of its origins. But nothing about this building shouts “ordinary” farmhouse. Instead, its exterior stature is neat and understated. The terracotta and white facade belies the grandeur that lives just beyond the magnificent fountain out front.
As you enter the lobby you are instantly drawn in by the eclectic decor, garnered from the owner’s world travels. The atmosphere is elegant and classic. Plush sofas are strategically placed in multiple groupings to encourage conversation.
I marveled at the antique furnishings, intriguing artwork, interesting knick knacks and delightful statues adorning the walls and walkways.
Rich rugs cover the tiled floors, and up above, I noticed period detailing such as high arches, beamed ceilings and Murano glass chandeliers.
At one end of the lobby sits a stately grand piano. Just beyond the sweeping glass walls, I caught a glimpse of the lush gardens and sparkling swimming pool.
La Fattoria houses 33 Classic rooms, 9 Superior rooms and 5 Junior Suites. The suites have the added luxury of a kitchenette and tranquil private garden, complete with lounge chairs and a bench swing. The Tuscan-style rooms are luxurious, yet comfortable. High wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta tiled floors, fine draperies and marbled-top furnishings created a stunning first impression.
Throughout the property, I found all the modern amenities I’d expect: free Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping, satellite TV, central heating and air, minibars and 24-hour front desk staffing.
Bathrooms are well appointed with marble tile, bidet, hair dryer, magnifying mirror, heated towel rack and either a rainfall shower or jetted tub. My garden suite had a huge tub which I enjoyed soaking in after a long day of exploring.
The beds are plush and extremely comfortable. Anothplus for retreat groups or friends traveling together: the king-sized beds can be prepared as two singles.
La Villa (the historic villa)
When I stepped into the historic villa, I instantly felt as if I’d stepped back in time. This striking 18-century home boasts breathtaking examples of Patrician architecture. Dozens of Murango glass chandeliers adorn the high ceilings, while original stucco work and delightful frescoes embellish the walls.
There are 12 sleeping chambers in the villa, including six deluxe rooms, three junior suites and three suites. I loved how each one is uniquely decorated with rich linens and lavish touches.
This is an enchanting place, where I imagined ladies and gentlemen in their finest frocks dancing the night away on the expansive ballroom floor. If you’re looking for an unusual and exquisite setting for a romantic wedding or special event, look no further. And if you or your guests decide to arrive by helicopter, there’s a heliport tucked away in the corner of the property.
One of my favorite surprises was the underground tunnel that connected the villa to the farmhouse. It was originally a passage to the stables but now you’ll find statue-lined halls under a vaulted crimson brick ceiling, a small gym and several meeting rooms.
There’s also a cozy wine cellar where tastings can be arranged for you and your fellow travelers. You’ll sip some of the best Tuscan labels, paired with a variety of cured meats and cheeses.
La Colonica (the country house)
As a retreat leader, I was thrilled to discover La Colonica, two lovely Tuscan-style country homes sitting side by side in a far corner of the property. In each unit, there are four large bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and comfortable sitting areas both inside and out.
Both boast a massive kitchen, perfect for the cooking classes offered by the hotel. There’s even a pizza oven on the patio of one unit. These quiet and cozy homes can be combined into one for larger groups.
Food Fit For Royalty
In keeping with the exquisite nature of the property, the restaurant, Il Cavalierre, offers a delightful array of local favorites, paired with rare wines from the world’s best cellars.
It is obvious that Chef Francesco Lorenzini loves to experiment with food as art. Each dish was carefully prepared in a way that engaged all my senses. It not only looked almost too good to eat, but it tasted divine.
The breakfast buffet is massive. You’ll find a full espresso bar, plus traditional Italian favorites, such as sweet pastries, savory breads, fresh fruits, yogurt, granola, cheeses, tomatoes and cured meats. In addition, they serve up tourist-friendly favorites like scrambled eggs, bacon and potatoes.
In order to offer guests the freshest fare possible, the restaurant abides by the philosophy of “zero kilometer”, which refers to using only local ingredients that have not traveled far after production.
The menu changes with the season and incorporates many ingredients harvested straight from the villa’s garden. This is true “farm to table” eating, a tradition familiar to Italians but a special treat to those of us visiting from the US.
There are several indoor dining areas, including a glass-walled veranda that overlooks the gardens. During the warmer months, the walls slide open so guests can dine al fresco. Tables are also set up under the vine-covered pergola, giving guests a view of the night stars twinkling above.
A Full-Service Venue
As if everything I’ve shared isn’t enough to entice you to stay at Villa Olmi, pet owners will be happy to hear that the property welcomes your furry friends at no extra charge. If you’re traveling with children and want a night on the town, they’ll arrange for a babysitter to entertain your little ones.
The hotel offers a full concierge service, including the organization of interesting tours and experiences in Florence and the Tuscan countryside. Imagine gazing down over the lush landscape in a helicopter or hugging the winding roads in a Ferrari.
For those hosting meetings or classes, the conference rooms can accommodate up to 100 attendees and has access to the latest in conference technology.
Engaged couples wanting to declare eternal love can book the small twelfth-century chapel for their vow exchange or arrange an intimate affair in the garden. Then leave it to the competent staff to arrange an elegant reception, complete with fine porcelain dishes, silver cutlery and crystal stemware. Chef Lorenzini will be happy to work with you to create the perfect menu for your special day.
Last but certainly not least is free private parking for those arriving by car. If you don’t have your own vehicle, Villa Olmi has a shuttle service that provides transportation to the Florence city center at scheduled times throughout the day. One thing to note: this service was suspended due to Covid but will resume in April 2022.
The Doors Are Open

Aussie expat turned Italian real estate expert Nikki Taylor wants your help to smash a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the Largest Online Photo Album of Handwritten Notes.

She is calling on the world of Italy lovers to unite after this intense period of disconnection and suffering, and express love for the bel paese via contributing a handwritten note to make history.

In normal circumstances, Italy is one of the most visited countries on earth, and for good reason.

But the struggles of the past 2 years have hit hard – not only severely affecting tourism in Italy, but also weighing heavily on the hearts of the millions of people around the world who hold a deep connection to Italy and their travels there.

We all adore Italy, it’s why millions of people are connected in thousands of Italy-focused social media groups – it’s something that gives us all a sense of the best parts of life. To watch Italy (and the world) struggle so much over the past couple of years due to the pandemic has been absolutely tragic.” Said Nikki.

I wanted to do something inspirational, that connects us all as a global community, united in our love of this beautiful place. And attempting a Guinness World Records title seemed like a beautiful project.”

She’s also not stopping at the general public, and wants to see the most notable Italian-loving celebrities put their pens to paper. George Clooney, JLO, Elizabeth Gilbert and Julia Roberts are all in her sights, as is Elon Musk who is currently in Florence.

And if anyone can do something that cheeky and courageous, it’s Nikki.

With a former career in corporate investment banking, then travelling the world and making a name for herself in the issue-fraught world of Italian real estate before branching out to her own self-run real estate business, Nikki is no stranger to adversity.

She has been living and working in Italy for almost 7 years, is fluently bilingual, and has now settled in the Puglia region with her husband Corrado, and their two beautiful boys Lorenzo and Santiago. The love affair with Italy goes deep.

In fact, Nikki has stated that the first time she landed in Florence 21 years ago, she remembers feeling instantly “at home” and heard herself saying “I’m going to retire here.”

And it’s a feeling that is definitely repeated in the online spaces of Italy lovers currently separated from the place they love to visit yearly.

Nikki’s work in real estate focuses on helping to educate foreign buyers to avoid the surprising and expensive pitfalls of Italian property purchase. She has helped clients save over €2.6 million dollars this year alone.

Because of this work, Nikki is connected to many thousands of Italy lovers online every day.

In our groups hundreds of people are regularly posting about their desperation to return and how “homesick” they feel for Italy.” Said Nikki. “It’s like a physical pain that people experience. I’ve never seen a reaction like this to any other country, and it’s something I can relate to myself.

I think it’s really important for us to keep hold of the things we truly love in this global moment of difficulty, and to take actions that feel really good. This is one small thing we can all do to connect with each other right now, today.”

Nikki is asking Italy lovers to hand write a note to Italy that is very personal to them, contributing to the creation of the world’s largest online photo album of this kind.

“We’re looking for 35,000 people to express their love for Italy through a letter. I think this is a beautiful return to letter writing and also a way to use technology to connect us even further all around the globe.”

Not one to shy away from an enormous challenge, Nikki has given herself just 2 months to hit this very ambitious goal.

“I’m going to need absolutely everyone’s help!” She says. “We need 35,000 notes sent in and I know we can exceed that. I want to show the world how much we all love lately and that we are all stronger together. I know we can hit this goal!”

The notes are already flying in, and it’s a beautiful confirmation of exactly what Nikki is saying – that people all around the globe have a truly deep reaction to Italy, the country that holds a powerful place in their hearts.

“Italy became my heart home when I spent 3 months there healing from heartbreak.”

“I love that the sea is never far away and the ancient streets that lead the way.”

“Each time I visit, I feel as if I belong there. My 4 Italian Nonni seem to manifest their presence, telling me not to leave. Bella Italia beckons me “home” to stay.”

The romantic power of Italy to invoke deep feelings in people seems not to have been at all diminished by the difficulties of this pandemic experience, in fact, if the notes coming into the world record attempt are anything to go by, it has only intensified.

Nikki wants to see as many people get on board with this attempt as possible, and is gifting an exclusive ebook bundle of The Ultimate Secrets Of Living In Italy to everyone who enters as a thank you for helping her to make history.

To join the official world record attempt for free and be a part of this historical event, simply write a short note to Italy, take a close up photo of the note and then head to italyworldrecord.com to fill out the form.

You can follow the progress of the official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ attempt on Instagram and Facebook.

As the editor in Chief of The Hotel Guide, I find myself in the most amazing parts of the world.

One of my favorite places is Italy and owning property there is a dream of mine.

For those of you who share that dream, here is a wonderful article by Nikki Taylor, who helps people realize their desires of becoming expats in bella Italia!

My kind of La Dolce Vita……

In the kind of work I do, I have so many people ask me where is my favourite part of Italy?

I always say “trying to decide between your favourite part of Italy is like trying to decide who is your favourite child” – virtually impossible!

Since moving to this beautiful country nearly 6 years ago I have had the privilege of seeing some of the most beautiful parts of Italy. I work in the both the real estate and holiday rentals industries and I created the industry’s first ever coaching course called “Purchase the Dream”, guiding overseas buyers how to confidently purchase property in Italy and create their own La Dolce Vita lifestyle.

Forbes magazine recently wrote that Italy is the #1 country worldwide right now for under market value properties in Italy. These sentiments are totally in alignment with my program “La Dolce Vita on a Shoestring” where I curate a handpicked list of the best under market value properties Italy has to offer; whether it be for personal use or for use as a Holiday Rental to generate a passive income.

When I first arrived in Italy I was living in the far north east on the Austrian border in a town called Bolzano; it is stunning like a postcard. Picture breath taking mountains, Austrian style architecture and hillside vineyards. Bolzano has been named numerous times as having the best quality of life in Italy.

But for me? My heart is in the far south in Puglia where I live. Being from Australia, I grew up by the beach and it is where I feel most connected in Italy.

If you have never been to Puglia let me describe it for you. Imagine hundreds of miles of crystal clear coastline, warm shallow water that feels like a warm bath, Baroque style architecture and whitewashed buildings that make you feel like you could be on a Greek island. A rustic red earth countryside, dotted with the famous iconic trulli houses, that you only find in Puglia.

My favourite part of Puglia is definitely Monopoli; a charming seaside town that is a total hotspot for tourism and the surrounding towns such as Ostuni, Polignano a Mare and the famous trulli town of Alberobello are definitely worth adding to the itinerary!

You will not be disappointed with Puglia, southern Italy’s shining jewel.
